Plain English:

Hi There! Yiying Lu here. My name means “Happy Creative Land” in Chinese:Yi” 怡: Happy,Ying 颖: Creative & “Lu” 陆: Land.

Try to say it, you have to smile to pronounce it right, right?

I grew up in Shanghai, China, and was educated in Sydney, Australia, and London, UK. I am currently based in San Francisco as the founder and creative director of my bilingual (English & Chinese) creative & innovation studio, YIYING LU, specializing in digital art creation, cross-cultural branding & design, cross-disciplinary innovation, creative education, and bilingual speaking. I speak in both English and Chinese Mandarin at conferences around the world on design and innovation, including TEDx, Talks at Google, SXSW, Adobe MAX, Web Summit, Peking University, Tsinghua University, NYU Shanghai and so on.

I am grateful to be named a Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business,  a “Top 10 Emerging Leader in Innovation” of Microsoft Next 100 series, and a winner of Shorty Awards in Design. My projects have been featured in numerous publications, including The New York TimesForbesFast CompanyThe AtlanticNBC NewsTIMEWired MagazineThe Verge, LA Times, CNN and BBC, with clients including Disney, Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, Twitter, Sony, Expedia and so on. Notable projects include: Disney Shanghai Opening Campaign, the official Dumpling, chopsticks, fortune cookie, take-out box, peacock and Boba tea emoji, the Twitter Fail WhaleConan O’Brien’s Pale Whale, and the SXSW Interactive Big Bag Art.

In 2017, I became IDEO’s first global Creative Collaborator in China. Before that, I was the Global Creative Director at 500 Startups, where I worked with hundreds of startups on branding, design and marketing. Committed to bridging the gap between art and technology, I also serve as Commissioner of the San Francisco Arts Commission, appointed by Mayor London Breed from April 2021.

I am interested in unifying dualities, by connecting art and tech, business and culture, work and life, as well as being a bridge between East and West.

I tweet at arbitrary times on Twitter and test the *6* degree of separation rule on Linkedin. You can also find me on Instagram and Youtube.
